Helios
Process innovation to extract iron from iron ore without releasing CO2.

The problem
The steel mining industry is a major contributor to global emissions, responsible for 7% of total CO₂ output. Additionally traditional refining methods do not allow the steel industry to make use of low-grade iron ore, limiting efficiency and sustainability.
The solution
Helios replaces coal and hydrogen with sodium to extract iron from ore—achieving zero direct carbon emissions. Their proprietary modular furnace eliminates the need for blast furnaces, enabling mining companies to refine iron on-site and sell directly to steelmakers. This breakthrough technology also unlocks the potential of previously unusable low-grade ores, making steel production cleaner and more efficient.
